Kathryn (Johnson) Schultz, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great great-grandmother, passed away on April 16, 2016 at Alden Care Valley Ridge facility in Bloomingdale, IL.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 23 at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be on Friday from 4-7 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery, Judson, Blue Earth County.
Kathryn was born on September 27, 1918 in Mankato, MN, and lived in or near Mankato or Judson most of her life. She married L. Harvey Evans in Mankato in 1939. She moved from Mankato in 2002, to IL to be closer to her two daughters and great-grandchildren.
In the very early 1950's, Kathryn and her husband, Harvey, tried farming in SD and southwest MN, but returned to Mankato in 1955. She worked with her husband or parents at various drive-ins and cafes in Mankato, until she and her husband opened a small cafe, The Grotto, on 5th St, across from the Blue Earth County building. Kathryn left that behind, after her husband tragically died in a car accident in 1957. She then worked for her cousin's restaurant, the E&H Cafe on Front St, Rindalaub's Bakery, and finally waitressed for several years at The Inne Town Hotel. She left the Inne Town to open a small Scandinavian import shop, The Viking Shop, in her home, in the late 1960's.
Her greatest joys in life revolved around her home and taking care of her family. She loved to cook and bake for family and friends, finding joy in feeding whoever was a guest in her home. She had a cookbook collection to rival none, and had thousands upon thousands of recipes she clipped from magazine, newspapers, wherever she could find them!
Kathryn is survived by her daughters, Cindy Smith of Franklin, IN and Sally McGraw (John); 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
Kathryn was preceded in death by her first husband, L. Harvey Evans, in 1957; her second husband, Channing Winter, in 1978; and her third husband, Dominick Schultz, in 1999; children, Jerry Evans and Diane Magliore; her parents, C. Warner and Estelle (née Bates) Johnson; sister, Betty Kleiv; brother, Charles Johnson; and one grandson, Kevin Vanlandingham.
