Orel Marie Hublou Nicklawsky
September 26, 1920 – April 4, 2016
Orel was born and raised in Anamoose, ND. She was the youngest of the six children born to Mary (McNamara) and Martin Hublou. She attended the College of St. Benedict and Dakota Business College, then settled in Fargo where she worked as a secretary for a lawyer and later at the Veterans Administration. Orel married Donald T. Nicklawsky on July 8th, 1950 at St. Mary’s Cathedral. (Don worked for Northwestern Savings and Loan and died on June 19th, 1987.) Orel and Don were among the first members of The Church of the Nativity, where they were active parishioners.
Don and Orel had six children: Paul (Manhattan, MT), John (Nevis, MN), Anna Maria Kelly (Cherry Hill, NJ) Teresa Ball (Salt Lake City, UT), Rita Baumann (Madelia, MN), Lisa Foss (Flagstaff, AZ), nine grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Orel was artistic (rosemaling almost anything), liked to travel, and enjoyed being at the family lake cottage, where she puttered in her garden and never went in the water. She was a nurturing and forgiving mother, a meticulous housekeeper, and a snazzy dresser who preferred red and always accessorized. Her sense of humor, loving nature, and good cooking were always appreciated.
Seven years ago, Orel moved to Mankato, MN to be closer to family. In recent years, she received wonderful care at Ecumen Pathstone Living.
A memorial Mass and internment will occur in Fargo this summer.
Memorials may be sent to Memory Care at Ecumen Pathstone Living (718 Mound Ave, Mankato MN 56001) or to a charity of the donor’s choosing.
