Dorothy M. Bjerke, age 85, of Mankato, died on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Hillcrest Health Care Center.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Christ the King Lutheran Church with Reverend Patrick Patterson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Glenwood Cemetery. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Dorothy was born February 8, 1931 in Pipestone, MN to Richard and Elsie (Paulson) Schulze. She graduated from Pipestone High School in 1949 and later studied at the University of Minnesota and Mankato State Teachers College. Dorothy was united in marriage to Luverne “Vern” Bjerke on August 18, 1952. Prior to her marriage, she taught first and second grade. The Bjerke family were Charter Members of Christ the King Lutheran Church since 1962. Dorothy was a choir director for many years, active in other church activities, and was employed as secretary. Dorothy was also employed as a secretary at East High School and for a law firm in Mankato. In her spare time, she enjoyed sewing, reading, and going for walks. Her warm smile will be dearly missed.
Dorothy is survived by her son, Al Bjerke of Mankato; daughter, Julie Bjerke of North Mankato; nephew and nieces, brother-in-law, Pehr Pehrsson; nephew and nieces, Pehr, Pamela, and Kirsten.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vern, in 2015; and sister, Geraldine Pehrsson.
The family wishes to extend its best regards and respect to the staff at Hillcrest Health Care Center for their loving care. Even after her stroke, Dorothy always responded to music and the staff made it a priority to have it available to her.
