Shirley M. Mertesdorf, age 90, of Mankato, died peacefully, Saturday, February, 27, 2016, surrounded by her family at Keystone Senior Living in Mankato.
Funeral Service 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 3, 2016 at Grace United Methodist Church, Vernon Center. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at the church on Thursday. Interment will be in Vernon Center Cemetery.
Shirley was born January 18, 1926 to James A. and E. Helen (Cochran) Caudle in Winnebago. She attended Bass Lake Country School, Winnebago High School, and graduated from Garden City High School in 1943. She then graduated from cosmetology school and worked until her marriage to Dean E. Mertesdorf on October 4, 1944 at Grace Methodist Church in Vernon Center. Shirley and Dean resided on the Mertesdorf family farm until retirement in 1993. They moved to Lake Crystal and resided for 18 years until moving to Keystone Retirement Community in Mankato. Shirley enjoyed farm life. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church where she was active with the United Methodist Women, Mary Circle, and the church choir. Shirley was a soloist at many weddings and funerals. Shirley enjoyed sewing, needle work, yard work, and Northern Minnesota family vacations. Shirley and Dean wintered for many years in Mesa, AZ. She enjoyed hosting family gatherings and entertaining family and friends. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren with their many activities and watching them grow into adulthood.
Shirley is survived by her husband of 71 years, Dean of Mankato; four children, James (Gloria) Mertesdorf of Pine Island, Cheryl (Frank) Lushine of Edina, Patti (Daryl) Meyer of North Mankato, and Dara (Bob) Stevens of Vernon Center; nine grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; brother-in-law, Karl Fredericksen of Lake Crystal; sister-in-law, Ruth Hendricksen of Truman; several nieces and nephews.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Arlene Fredericksen; grandson, Eric Mertesdorf.
