David R. Lindenberg, 84 of Mankato, died January 8, 2016 after a short battle with ALS.
Celebration of Life will be 11 a.m., Saturday, May 21 at Christ the King Lutheran Church in Mankato with visitation starting at 9:30 a.m. Burial will follow later at Woodlawn Cemetery, St. Peter. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Memorials preferred to The ALS Association, MN/ND/SD chapter helping local families in need (333 N. Washington Ave., Minneapolis, MN 55401) or the Roy and Irene Lindenberg Endowment Fund at Gustavus Adolphus College (Advancement office/Maggie Forster, 800 West College Avenue, St. Peter, MN 56082) for a local St. Peter student, or a charity of donor's choice.
David was born in St. Peter to Roy “Tuddie” and Irene (Haugdahl) Lindenberg. He graduated from St. Peter High School and later received a B.A. degree in Business from Gustavus Adolphus, where he was a member of the OK fraternity and golf team. David worked for Minnesota Natural Gas Company (Minnesota Natural Gas) in St. Peter, Mankato, and St. Louis Park for nearly 20 years. He was employed by Mankato Citizen’s Telephone Company/Hickory Tech, retiring in 1993. On October 16, 1954, he married Barbara Melgaard in Warren, MN and they were blessed with five children.
David served on many community boards, chairing many civic fundraisers. He was pivotal in starting the youth hockey program in Mankato and served on the District 77 school board for 12 years (chairman three years). He was also an active member of the downtown Kiwanis Club, MUI, YMCA, Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mankato Golf Club, Tipsinah Mounds Golf Club, and Shoreland Country Club. His love and talent for the game of golf, duck hunting with his sons, handball, reading, and Canadian fishing occupied his non-working hours.
David and Barbara owned a cabin on Lake Pomme de Terre in Grant County for 37 years and resided there from May to November after retirement – Dave’s favorite place in the whole world. They enjoyed winter months with friends in Texas and Alabama.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Barbara Lindenberg; children, Karna (Paul) Tyler, Mark (Kandi) Lindenberg, Kristi (Jay) Leland, Todd (Kathleen) Lindenberg, and Julie (Steve) Varuska; grandchildren, Kaitlin and Liam Tyler, Dave Lindenberg, Bree (Pat) Ryan, Kyle and Cody Leland, and Maggie and Jack Varuska; and great-grandchildren, Millie and Deacon Ryan. David was preceded in death by his parents, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
