Rae Husak, 80, of Mankato passed peacefully Wednesday, December 2, 2015, at United Hospital in St. Paul following a brief illness.
Rae was born October 10, 1935 to Rudolph and Helen (Runge) Hohenfield in Beatrice, Nebraska. She moved with her family to Mason City, Iowa and graduated from high school in 1952. While working at KGLO-TV in Mason City, she met her husband, John F. Husak. They were married June 13, 1959 in Mason City. They moved to Mankato in 1960 with the start of KEYC-TV. Rae enjoyed being a homemaker and worked closely with John as a volunteer for many organizations. She was a former Cub Scout Den Mother and supporter and volunteer of ECHO Food Shelf and Mankato Lions Club. She visited residents at several local nursing homes and was a school paraprofessional helping children learn to read. Rae had been active in the church guild at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. She opened her home to the neighborhood kids as a home for everyone. Rae enjoyed gardening, birding, reading, and her inquiring mind kept her learning new things all of her life.
Rae is survived by her three children, Gregory (Janet) Husak of Mankato, Thomas Husak of Mankato, and Lisa (Harlan) Backlund of Jordan; three grandchildren, John Scott Husak, Taylor Husak, and Aaron Backlund; two sisters, Virginia Thomas of Illinois and Loretta Schultz of Mason City, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Rae was preceded in death by her parents; husband John in 2000, and eight siblings.
A private family service will be held. Memorials may be given to ECHO Food Shelf of Mankato or donor’s choice. Northview - North Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
