Martha Alice Schindle, age 89, of Mankato, died Tuesday, November 24, 2015, at Hillcrest Health Care Center in Mankato.
Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 28, 2015, at Centenary United Methodist Church in Mankato. Visitation will be one hour before service at the church. Interment will be in Glenwood Cemetery in Mankato. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Mankato YMCA or Centenary United Methodist Church. Mankato Mortuary handled the arrangements.
Martha was born April 14, 1926, to Charles and Clara (Santon) McKinney in Bluffton, Indiana. She attended grade school in Wells County, Indiana. Martha moved with her family to Birmingham, Michigan in 1937 and to Mankato in 1939. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1944 and attended Mankato Teachers College. Martha was united in marriage to Merle R. Schindle on September 3, 1946, in Mankato. She was a homemaker for her family and also assisted Merle with his companies, Schindle Construction and Northridge Properties. She was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church, where she was active with the Women’s Society and the church choir. She was also a member of the Mankato YMCA Women’s Club and the Seven Rivers Golf Club of Crystal River, FL. Martha and Merle enjoyed over 30 years of summers spent at their cabin on Birch Lake near Babbitt, MN, and winters at their home in the Crystal River area of Florida. She enjoyed fishing, golfing, and spending time with her family.
Martha is survived by four sons, Thomas (Kay) Schindle of Bozeman, MT, James (Sue) Schindle of North Mankato, William (Sharon) Schindle of North Mankato, and Donald (Sheila) Schindle of Eagan; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; brother, James (Edna) McKinney of Wayzata; and extended family.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Merle in February of 2011; two sisters, Katherine Freeburg and Dorothy Dirkswager; and brother, Charles McKinney, Jr.
