Northview - North Mankato Mortuary 2060 Commerce Dr North Mankato, MN 56003 507-388-2288 Russell P. Miller, age 90 of North Mankato, died Monday, August 24, 2015 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living. Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 28, 2015 at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. John Petersen officiating. Burial with Military Honors in Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be held from 5 - 7 p.m., Thursday at Northview - North Mankato Mortuary 2060 Commerce Drive North Mankato. Visitation also one hour before the service at the church on Friday. Russell was born August 10, 1925 to Oscar and Emma (Richter) Miller in Rapidan, Minnesota. He graduated from Canby High School in 1943. Russell enlisted in the U.S. Army immediately as WW II was in full swing. He took part in the D-Day invasion. He was wounded in combat in Normandy in 1944 and in Germany in 1945. Awards include the Purple Heart with one Oak Leaf Cluster. In 2015, Russ was awarded the Legion of Honor by the French Government. After the war, he attended Mankato Commercial College for a year and then worked in the foundry office of the Dotson Co. for seven years. He was united in marriage on August 9th, 1948 to Carol Hanson who was a year behind him at Canby High School. Later on, Russell decided to work for the U.S. Postal Service in Mankato. After retirement from the Postal Service, he worked part-time for Taco John's in North Mankato, which he enjoyed very much. Hobbies included yard work, bird watching, American History, golf, and watching the Twins. Russell is survived by a daughter, Bette (Doug) Berndt of Janesville; sons Dave (Renee) Miller of Seattle and Stan Miller of Eagan MN; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by his wife Carol in 2008; five sisters and four brothers. Russell was a member of Mankato VFW Post 950, a life-time member of DAV Chapter 10-Mankato and a long-time member of Mt. Olive Lutheran Church in Mankato, MN.
