Northview ~ North Mankato Mortuary 2060 Commerce Drive North Mankato, MN 56003 (507) 388-2288 Wayne "Lefty" Haefner, age 75, of Mankato, died on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at Pathstone Living. Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, January 2, 2015, at 11:00 a.m. at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Manakto with Rev. Robert Schneider officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, January 1 from 3-6 p.m. at Northview-North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday. Burial will be held at Calvary Cemetery at a later date. Memorials are preferred to Loyola Catholic School or Mayo Clinic Hospice. Wayne was born on October 10, 1939 in Mankato to Walter and Darlyne (Meurer) Haefner. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1957. He attended the University of Minnesota and played on the baseball team, winning the college World Series in 1960. He later graduated from Mankato State University with a bachelor degree. Wayne was united in marriage to Gloria Mullin. Lefty was a teacher at Fitzgerald Middle School for many years. He was also the Athletic Director and baseball coach at Loyola. Lefty was instrumental in founding the Mankato youth baseball program. He enjoyed time spent with family and playing pfeffer and golfing. He always looked forward to his yearly trips up north to Breezy Point. Lefty loved holidays spent with family. Lefty is survived by his wife, Gloria of Mankato; three sons, Patrick (Deb Zierke) Haefner of Lake Washington, Matt Haefner of Prior Lake, and Marty (Natalie) Haefner of Hudson, WI; grandchildren, Courtney and Derek Haefner, Andrew, Emily, and Kathryn Haefner, and Olivia and Trevor Haefner; siblings, Carol (Richard) Boruff of North Mankato, Judy Probart of S. Pasadena, FL, Kevin Haefner of Mankato, Roy (Sheila) Haefner of North Mankato, and Mark (Mary) Haefner of St. Louis Park, MN; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Michael; brother, David; and step-mother, Leone.
