Cora J. Breiter, age 102, of Monticello, and formerly of Lake Crystal MN, died Wednesday April 4, 2012 at the New River Medical Center Extended Care in Monticello following a brief illness.
Mass of Christian Burial is Wednesday, April 11, 2012 at 11 a.m. at Holy Family Catholic Church, Lake Crystal, MN, the Rev. John Wilmot officiating. Visitation 1 hour prior to Mass. Interment in Holy Family Catholic Cemetery with lunch and reception following. Visitation is Tuesday, April 10, 4-6 p.m. at Peterson-Grimsmo Funeral Chapel, 250 East Broadway in Monticello, MN. Memorials preferred to School Sisters of Notre Dame, New River Medical Center Extended Care or personal choice.
Cora was born on February 2, 1910, in a log house near Thief River Falls MN to Sever and Tillie (Weeks) Finhart. She lived her childhood years in Grand Meadow, Racine and Rochester, MN. She completed teacher's training in Mankato and took her first job in a one-room school in the Greenland District, near Madison Lake. After four years in various country schools, Cora quit teaching to marry Alphonse Breiter in 1932 and resided in Madison Lake for 5 years. She lived most of her married life in Lake Crystal, MN where she was a homemaker, mother of five and very active in her church and community. As her children grew up, Cora returned to college at Mankato State to complete her degree at age 55 and taught at St. Peter and Paul's grade school until 1975. After the loss of her husband of 58 years, she moved to Monticello in 1996 to be nearer her children. Cora was an avid card player and loved traveling, photography, reading, genealogy and especially visiting with people.
Preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister, husband, Al, son, John, and son-in-law, Wesley Sticken. Survived by son, Tom (Mary Alice) Breiter, daughters, Joan Breiter, Mary (Larry) Nolan, Marti (Pat) Lilja, daughter-in-law, Lorna Breiter, 9 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements are with the Peterson-Grimsmo Chapel of Monticello and the Lake Crystal Mortuary of Lake Crystal.
