Helen Valeria Lepel, age 86, of Hutchinson, died Saturday, February 18, 2012, at Harmony River Living Center in Hutchinson.
Funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Thursday, February 23, 2012, at Peace Lutheran Church in Hutchinson, with Rev. Gerhard Bode officiating. Interment will be in Peace Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be two hours prior to the service at the church on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Peace Lutheran Church. Arrangements were handled by Helen's grandson, John with Mankato Mortuary.
Helen was born on October 4, 1925 in Norwood. She was the daughter of Lorenz and Alice (Bachmann) Dietel. Helen was baptized at her parents' home on November 15, 1925, and later confirmed in her faith on April 2, 1939. She was a 1943 graduate of Central High School in Norwood. Helen was united in marriage to Hillerd Henry "H.H." Lepel on January 21, 1945, in Norwood. In 1947, Helen assisted H.H. with their Royal Maid Ice Cream Shop in Hutchinson. She was also employed with 3M in Hutchinson from 1965 to 1967. Helen was a member of Peace Lutheran Church. She enjoyed crafts, needlepoint and embroidery, and playing dominoes and cards. Following H.H.'s retirement, they enjoyed spending time at their cabin on Lake Manuella and later at their winter home in Las Vegas, NV. Helen and H.H. celebrated 58 years of marriage together before he passed away on May 13, 2003.
Helen is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Jule) Schroeder and Karen (Gene) Gruett, all of Hutchinson; four grandchildren, Chris (Lisa) Schroeder of Alexandria, Debra (Gary) Carlson of Hutchinson, John (Cindy) Schroeder of Mankato, and Julie (Todd) Hovendick of St. Cloud; five great-grandchildren, Megan and Miranda Carlson, Juelle and Analise Schroeder, and Claudia Hovendick; one great-great-grandson, Mason Carlson; one sister, Lorraine Maschke of Brooklyn Park; two sisters-in-law, Elsa Dietel of Maple Grove and Mary (Roland) Ebent of Hutchinson; also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, H.H., and two brothers, Reid and Lenn Dietel.
