Duane Edgar "Swannee" Swan, 80, of Lake Washington passed away on Saturday, February 11, 2012, at Mayo Clinic Health System - Mankato.
A Memorial Service will be held 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Crossview Covenant Church in North Mankato, with Pastor C.J. Langton officiating. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on Monday at NORTHVIEW - North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive. Memorials are preferred to the Mayo Clinic Health System - Mankato Hospice Program or the Andreas Cancer Center.
Duane was born September 28, 1931 to Edgar "Ike" and Myrtle (Robinson) Swan of North Mankato. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Roskens Bittner on March 19, 1977, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Duane served during the Korean War with the U.S. Navy from 1951 to 1955. While stationed in Key West, Florida, Duane had fond memories of serving as an aid to Admiral George Murray. He also spent time in Germany as a Naval instructor in demolition and small arms.
After his military service, Duane returned to the Mankato area and worked in construction including 30 years with Oscar Kulseth Construction. His last employment years were with the City of North Mankato where he worked on the city masonry projects including Caswell Park, North Links Golf Course and the city welcome signs. Duane enjoyed spending winters in Florida, golfing, fishing, and construction projects including building the family a brick home and a stone home. Swannee, as he is best known, spent time with his friends at his many coffee spots each morning. He especially loved his time helping his family with projects and cherished the time fishing with his granddaughters. Duane attended the Crossview Covenant Church.
Duane is survived by his wife of 35 years, Carolyn of Lake Washington; step-son, Mickey (Karlene) Bittner and their children, Emily, Alyssa, and Elizabeth of Hamilton, MI; daughter, Jodi (Wil) Netzer of La Crosse, WI; sister, La Jean (Gene) Hartman of North Mankato; mother-in-law, Dorothy Roskens of Emery, SD; brothers-in-law, James (Kathy) Roskens of Maple Grove, Gregory (Nancy) Roskens of Emery, SD, and Duane (Diana) Roskens of Boise, ID; and many nieces and nephews.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Elaine Tietz; father-in-law, Jake Roskens; and sister-in-law, Peggy Roskens.
