Charles Russell Crandall, 79, Mankato, passed away Wednesday August 22, 2012, at Hillcrest Health Care Center.
Services will be held at NORTHVIEW - North Mankato Mortuary on Saturday, August 25, 2012, at 11 AM with visitation two hours before the service. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery following the service.
Charles was born in Mankato on March 3, 1933, to Russell and Eleanore (Scholz) Crandall. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1951, Mankato TC in 1955 and served two years in the U.S. Army. In 1958 Charles took over the three generation family business in Mankato, Crandall's Jewelers, until his retirement in 1991.
Charles was a gifted artist, loved spending time in his mother's hometown of New York City. His grandpa would take him to Yankee Stadium to watch Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio. He loved the Twins and Vikings, enjoyed curling, and coffee with his buddies. Charles was quick witted with his one-liners, and enjoyed auctions along with flea markets and antique shows. He helped deliver Meals on Wheels, adamantly completed the Jumbles in the Free Press and was the world's best cribbage player. Charles excelled in playing the piano and clarinet and was a member of the Schell's Hobo Band.
Charles is survived by his brother Curt (Helen) of North Mankato, niece Chris Butler, her sons Alan, special friend Sarah, Ray, fianc"e Dominica and Charles' godson Bobby, Nephew, Paul Wingert, wife Debra, daughters, Victoria and Kathryn of North Mankato.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Charlotte Moberg.
