Neal Cyrus Spangenberg passed away in the comfort of his own home and surrounded by family on August 20, 2012 in Mankato, MN at the age of 85.
A graveside ceremony will be held 2:00pm Saturday, September 1, 2012 at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in New Ulm, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials will be donated to St. Jude Children's Hospital.
Neal was born to Frederick and Irene Spangenberg in New Ulm, MN on March 13, 1927. In his early years, Neal worked as a butcher in Rochester, MN and also Berkley, CA. before returning to MN to begin his career as a truck driver for Dahlen Transport Co. in Mankato. He enjoyed building and fixing things in his home, bowling with friends, and camping and fishing with his family. In retirement, his favorite hobby was visiting Laughlin, NV while winter-visiting in Yuma, AZ.
Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife of 64 years, Darhleen, their four children, Linda (Johnne) Syverson of Des Moines, IA, Claudia (Greg) McDunn of Sun City, AZ, David (Brenda) of Eagle Lake, MN, Kevin (Cheryl) of St. Louis, MO, along with 12 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother, Sidney (Betty) of Mankato and his sister, Mavis Morcus of St Peter, MN and his sister-in-law Hope Spangenberg of Fairmont, MN.
Neal was preceded in death by two sisters, Lucille (Leonard) Rickers, and Fern Meyer, his brother, Stan Spangenberg, sister-in-law Elva Spangenberg, brother-in-law Roger Royce and great granddaughter, Sophia Farinella.
