Duane V. Freyberg, age 82, passed gently into the night on Friday, March 21, 2008 in Naples, Florida.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 28, 2008 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Arne Jessen officiating. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be from 4-7p.m., Thursday, March 27, 2008 at Mankato Mortuary with a Masonic service following. Memorials are preferred to the Shriners Hospitals for Children.
Duane was born September 16, 1925 to Joey and and Hilda (Fedji) Freyberg in Mountain Lake, Minnesota. He lived a long and eventful life. Duane attended Mankato High School until he enlisted in the U.S. Army during the height of WWII. He was highly decorated, receiving the Bronze Star for his service in the South Pacific including Hell's Half Acre during WWII. After serving his country he returned to Mankato and graduated from the Mankato Commercial College. On October 17, 1948 Duane married Marjorie Root in Spring Valley, Minnesota. Upon graduating from college he went to work with his father at Mankato Oil Company. Duane served as President and co-owner of Mankato Oil Company for many years. Duane was very active in the Mankato community. He was a lifetime member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and past President of the Board of Trustees. He was a United Way Director. Duane was a member of the Masonic Lodge and a member of the Osman Shrine. He was active as past President of the Mankato Shrine Club and Mankato T-Birds. He served as President of the Northwest Petroleum Association, was past President of the Mankato Toastmasters, past President of the Mankato Jaycees and served as the Jaycees state secretary. Locally, he was a member of the Kiwanis, Elks, and Moose clubs. Duane enjoyed motorcycles, motor homes, living near the water, round table discussions at the Elks Club, spending winters in Florida, and colorful attire.
Duane is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Mankato; son, Steven Freyberg (Lynette) of Lake Washington; daughters, Sandra McDonald (Jack) of Anoka, Sherry Kozitza (Bill) of Lake Washington, Susan Glaser (Ted) of Mankato and Sheila Seigfreid (Tom) of North Mankato, ten grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Duane was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Noel.
