George E. Carlstrom Jr., age 76, of North Mankato, died Monday, March 3, 2008 at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, March 8, 2008 at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Joel Erickson officiating. Visitation will be held from 4 " 7 p.m., Friday at Mankato Mortuary and one hour before the service at the church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Grace Lutheran Church.
George E. Carlstrom Jr. was born January 13, 1932 to George E. and Gladys (Sebey) Carlstrom Sr. in Mankato. He graduated from Mankato High School in 1950. He was united in marriage to Darlene "Dolly" Overlie on July 26, 1953 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Mankato. George served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. He went to work for his father at George E. Carlstrom Construction and George was eventually named president of the Carlstrom Construction Company, Carlstrom Steel Supply, and New Ulm Quartzite Quarries. Carlstrom Construction built many of the Taylor Corporation buildings in Mankato and Minneapolis; the fine arts complex, Folke Bernadotte Memorial Library, and Nobel Science Hall at Gustavus Adolphus College; Mankato Citizens Telephone office; the Student Union and Armstrong Hall at Minnesota State University, Mankato. He also built Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the addition at Grace Lutheran Church both in Mankato.
George was an active member of Grace Lutheran Church, the Elks Club, and was on the Board of Directors at Valley National Bank. George enjoyed being in his home, working crossword puzzles, cooking, and was an avid reader. Most Saturday afternoons he could be found in Morton, MN enjoying the game of chance and the many friends he had.
George is survived by his wife, Dolly of North Mankato and Phoenix, AZ; three children, Jeffrey Carlstrom of Mankato, Karene "Kari" Merkow, and Todd Carlstrom both of Phoenix, AZ; two grandchildren, Meghan (Rick) Weisheit, and Aaron David Merkow both of Phoenix, AZ; brother Steven L. Carlstrom; aunt Mary Anderson of North Mankato; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
George was preceded in death by his parents, and brother, Bradley.
