Harold Richard Sandell, age 92, died February 23, 2008 at Mankato House Health Care Center from complications of Alzheimer's disease.
Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at Evangelical Covenant Church in North Mankato with Rev. Kevin Melin and Rev. Roger Gilbert officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Burial will be at Kasota Hill Cemetery in Kasota. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Alzheimer's Association. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Harold was born on July 14, 1915 to Richard J. and Ellen (Peterson) Sandell in Mankato. He grew up at 125 Shaubut Street, Mankato. His first job was delivering milk for a neighbor who raised dairy cattle. Harold graduated from Mankato High School in 1933. He was on active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1942 to 1945. Harold completed the Electrical Course Program in 1942 at the U.S. Naval Training School in Ames, IA, and completed the Gyro Compass School Program in 1943 at the U.S. Naval Training Station in San Diego, CA. He served for 26 months on ships in the Pacific Ocean. Most of the time, he was on a tender in the New Guinea and Philippines area. He also served in the Solomon, New Hebrides, and Admiralty Islands. Harold held rank of electrician's mate second class. He was in charge of the gyro repair shop aboard the tender, where gyrocompasses, essential to the navigation of the ship, were repaired and serviced. Harold was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy in September, 1945.
Harold married Mildred Krinke on May 4, 1945, at her family's home near Lamberton, MN. They made their home in Mankato. He worked for Southern Minnesota Supply Company (Mankato) and H & C Electric (Mankato). In 1980, Harold retired from full-time employment. Harold was a life-long member of the Evangelical Covenant Church, North Mankato, where he held many volunteer positions, including usher, financial secretary, and custodian. He enjoyed gardening and woodworking.
Harold is survived by his wife, Mildred; their three children, Dennis (Elizabeth) Sandell of Mankato, Ronald Sandell of Stewart, and Beverly (Dean) Leonard of Albert Lea; two grandchildren, Karen Leonard and Amanda Leonard; his brother, Willard (Elinore) Sandell of San Diego, CA; nieces, nephews, and cousins. Harold was preceded in death by his parents, Richard and Ellen Sandell; his sister, Marion; and two brothers, Willis and Arnold.
Harold will be remembered for his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, for his love for his family, and for his loyalty and service to his community.
