Arlo J. Hovick, age 78, of Mankato, died Friday, June 15, 2012 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.
Memorial Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, June 26, 2012 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Jay Dahlvang officiating. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m., until the start of the service at the church. Memorials may be directed toward Bethlehem Lutheran or the ECHO Food Shelf. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.
Arlo was born on October 12, 1933 to Tilford and Josephine (Risdahl) Hovick in Badger, IA. He grew up on a dairy with his five siblings and always said he had the happiest childhood a boy could have. Arlo graduated from Fort Dodge High School in 1952 and attended Iowa State College. He served in the United States Army at the end of the Korean War and was honorably discharged in 1956. Arlo was united in marriage to Carolyn Butler at the Saint Paul Lutheran Church in Fort Dodge, IA on June 21, 1958.
Arlo worked as an assistant manager at the Quaker Oats grain elevator in Williams, IA in 1959 and as assistant manager of the Co-op in Webster City, IA. In 1964 he became a loss prevention agent for Famers Elevator Mutual Insurance Co. in Champaign, IL. In 1974 Arlo and Carolyn moved to Mankato, MN. Arlo was a representative selling Zimmerman Grain Dryers to grain elevators in five Midwest states. He continued selling for F.F.I when they bought out the Zimmerman Company and retired in 1999.
Arlo was a life member of the Grain Elevator and Processing society. He was a member of the Sons of Norway as well. Arlo loved his family, enjoyed collecting cast iron farm toys and praising God by singing in his church choir where-ever he lived.
Arlo is survived by his wife Carolyn of Mankato; son, Alec and Kim (Kurth) Hovick of Dickinson, ND; grandchildren, Nicole Hovick of Rochester, MN, Jacob Hovick of Dickinson, ND, Derek Hovick of Dickinson, ND; son, Ted Hovick of Fort Worth, TX; daughter, Ruth and Andrew Winick of Lake Forest, IL; grandchildren, William and Mark of Lake Forest, IL; siblings, Allman (Donna), JoAnn Hilstad, Joyce Johanson, Lavonne Nelson; sisters-in-law, Shirley Hovick, Charlene (Robert) Burke and many nieces and nephews.
Arlo was preceded in death by his brother, Carroll; brothers-in-law, Charles O'Brion, Charles Hilstad, Morris Johanson, and Jerry Nelson.
