Joseph Frederick Berg, age 98, of North Mankato, passed from this earth on Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Oak Terrace Assisted Living in North Mankato, leaving behind a loving family and a myriad of friends.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at First Congregational U.C.C. in Mankato. Interment will be in the Sanborn City Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. on Monday at NORTHVIEW " North Mankato Mortuary, 2060 Commerce Drive, and continues one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Memorials may be given to United Campus Ministry.

Joseph was born on December 19, 1913, in Stark Township, Brown County, MN. He was the son of Frederick and Anna (Soukup) Berg. Joseph received his education in the Sleepy Eye and Sanborn schools. For several years he worked summers on area farms and full time at Ted Hensch's General Store in Sanborn. From 1940-1941, he studied telegraphy and passed the examinations given by the Chicago Northwestern Railroad in Mason City, IA. He was an agent-telegrapher for the next 34 years.

Joseph was united in marriage to Lois Elinor Gibson on April 25, 1943, in Glenwood. Their son, Timothy was born on March 14, 1951. Joseph was a member of the Bricelyn City Council and also his church choir in Comfrey. He received his 50 year pin from the Transportation Communications International Union and was a member until his death. Joseph enjoyed the railroads and trains, working with his hands to make repairs for his family, and traveling. He and Lois visited all 50 states, most of Canada, and ten European countries. He enjoyed children and was a favorite with his granddaughters and great-granddaughters. Joseph was a modest man but well respected by one and all.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Lois Berg; son, Timothy Berg and fianc"e, Dr. Bonnie Lund; granddaughter, Danielle (Steve) Goette and their children, Victoria and Emily, and granddaughter, Desiree Berg, all of North Mankato; two sisters, Vikki Scarbrough of Sun City, AZ and Lucille Lewey of Fountain Valley, CA; one brother, Nick (Marge) Berg of Rapid City, SD; also many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Harold; five sisters, Margaret, Bertha, Francis, Alice, and Cathy; and Tim's wife, Marsha.
