Vern Oman, age 86, of Mankato, died Saturday, April 14, 2012 at the Zumbrota Care Center in Zumbrota, Minnesota.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, April 19, 2012 at NORTHVIEW - North Mankato Mortuary 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, MN, with Leroy Martin officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery Beauford, Minnesota. Visitation will be one hour before the service on Thursday. Memorials are suggested to Beauford Oak Hill Cemetery.

Vern was born October 31, 1925 to Joe and Mildred Oman on the home farm in New Boston, Missouri. He farmed with his dad until entering the Army in September 1944. He served in Japan and was discharged in November 1946. He then went to Illinois where he farmed with his uncle. For four years he worked for the Purina Feed Store in Princeton, IL. He was then employed at North Star Concrete in Mankato, MN until his retirement in 1980.

Vern married Lucille DeRemer of Good Thunder, MN on August 17, 1953 in the town of Ohio, IL. They lived in Albert Lea, MN for a year before moving to Mankato where they resided for over 50 years. Lucille died in July 2009.

Vern was a member of the American Legion, Mankato Cycle Club and the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

In February 2011 Vern moved to Pine Island, MN to live with his nephew-in-law, Darrel (Judy) Ellis where he was surrounded by the love of their children and grandchildren. He enjoyed playing cards and visiting with friends and relatives. He was an avid vegetable and flower gardener. Before Lucille's death they traveled to various areas of the country with Darrel and Judy.

Vern was preceded in death by his wife, parents, brother, Joe Jr. and sister, Ellen Harl. In addition to Darrel and his family, he is survived by his niece, Sharon (Leroy) Martin of Missouri, their children and grandchildren, other nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, two sisters-in-law, Florence Ellis of Pine Island, and Marian Schubbe of Mapleton.
