Valleen M. Carlson, age 77, of Mankato, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Laurel's Edge Assisted Living.
A Celebration of Valleen's Life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, August 4, 2012 at Northview - North Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 9-10:30 at Northview. Interment will be at the Vernon Center Cemetery.
Valleen Meta was born on April 27, 1935 to Martin and Meta (Hohenstein) Schwarz on the Vernon Center Township family farm. She attended country school, District 24, for seven years from 1940-1947. She graduated from Vernon Center Elementary School in 1948 and Garden City High School in 1952. In August 1955, Valleen received her B.S. degree in Home Economics and English from Mankato State Teacher's College, followed by teaching in Freeborn, MN. From 1957-58 she attended Iowa State University at Ames, IA for post graduate work, followed by teaching in Chandler, MN for three years. From 1961-62 she taught in Woodlake, CA prior to her marriage on April 22, 1962 at Vernon Center St. Peter's Lutheran Church. She and her husband Phillip resided afterward in Titusville, FL where he worked on the Atlantic Missile Range on Cape Canaveral. Their daughters, Rachel and Rebecca were adopted in Florida. Upon the death of Valleen's father, the family moved back to the family farm in 1967 and resided there until moving to Mankato in 2004.
Valleen was an active member in the Mankato Church of Christ since Aug. 7, 1974. A pro-life activist, she was a member of MCCL. She was engaged in numerous crafts with her passion being hardanger, while listening to the Bible on tape as well as hymns. She enjoyed singing in harmony, traveling, hosting lunches for friends, and spoiling her precious grandchildren.
Valleen is survived by her husband, Phillip; two daughters, Rachel (Greg) Geiselman of Richland Center, WI and Rebecca Solensten of Stillwater, MN; four grandchildren, Ana and Phillip Geiselman and Brittany and Grant Solensten; two sisters, Elaine (Carl) Grannis of Lewisville and Norma (Robert) Carlson of North Mankato; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Valleen was preceded in death by her parents, Martin and Meta Schwarz.
