Curt was born in Jordan, Minnesota on October 30, 1936, to Wallace and Rose (Werth) Borchert. His family moved to North Mankato when he was age 9. Curt's life was spent in the Baking Industry. He started at age 13 apprenticing at Page's Bakery in North Mankato. He worked there until age 23 when he served in the US Army. In 1962, he managed the Red Owl Bakery in Lake Crystal and later Piggly Wiggly in Mankato. Curt was a Production Baking Instructor at South Central Technical College in North Mankato for 18 years. He then taught at Dunwoody Institute in Minneapolis. Curt was hired as a Technical Service and Sales Representative for bakery distributors: Puratos, Bretchet and Richter Best Brands. He formulated a number of bakery items on grocery shelves yet today like, "Chunky Cinnamon Bread," or as his family would call it "Grandpa Bread." His passion was for baking breads but celebration cakes were always a delight. In March 1987, he was recognized by the Retail Bakers of America as a Master Baker. On February 23, 2012, he was inducted into the Upper Midwest Bakery Hall of Fame, in recognition of his considerable contributions to the Baking Industry by the Upper Midwest Bakery Association. Until his death he served as the Executive Director of the association.
Curt was united in marriage to JoAnn Neubert on March 3, 1962, in North Mankato. He was a member of Holy Rosary Parish in North Mankato, where he served in the capacity of youth director for 30 years and served as an usher, Eucharistic Minister, and Catechist. He was a member of the North Mankato 5551 KC's. Curt was involved a variety of functions in the Diocese of New Ulm. He chaired the Diocesan Worship Committee and was part of the founding team for the Riverbend Teen's Encounter Christ Retreat in the diocese. In September of 1987, he was awarded the Diocesan Distinguished Service Medal. Curt was Scout Master at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. His many years of working with and teaching of youth were his zeal and delight. His joys in life included swinging a golf club, boating and fishing, gardening especially flowers and vegetables. In recent years Curt enjoyed snowmobiling. His dog Shadow brought him much companionship. The greatest of his delights were his family. Curt was married for 50 years and will be missed as husband, dad and grandpa.
Curt is survived by his wife, JoAnn Borchert of North Mankato; son, Gregory (Carri Lynn) Borchert and their children, Brett and Heather of Mankato; daughter, Michelle (Peder) Davisson and their children, Gretchen and Jonathan of Crystal; siblings, Mildred Eagan, Wally Borchert, Ronald Borchert, Alan Borchert, Clayton Borchert, Dale Borchert and Pamela Brooks; and many nieces and nephews.
