James Kenneth Bruce was born on August 20, 1946 to Forrest and Miriam (Hackett) Bruce in Stillwater. He attended school in Mankato and graduated from Mankato High School in 1964. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1964 and was stationed in Germany. After being discharged Jim began a 40-year career working as a lab technician for CHS (Honeymead). On June 4, 1977 he married Nancy Chatleain at their home in South Bend Township.
Jim was very passionate about motorcycling. It was a lifelong hobby which took him and Nancy and many friends across the United States and Canada. He was very proud to have done all this on his BMW motorcycles. He was a member of the BMW MOA where he received awards for achieving the 200,000 mile mark. Jim had a great love of the outdoors. He backpacked and hiked many places including the Superior Hiking Trail, Grand Teton National Park and South Dakota. Cross country skiing lead him to participate in many long distance races including the Birkebiner in Wisconsin and the Mora Vasaloppet. Bicycling was his summer form of exercise. Jim would often ride 30 miles after getting off work. Kayaking could have been his favorite activity. His adventures included paddling on the Mississippi River, Lake Superior, Lewis and Clarks' path along the Missouri River, the Pacific Ocean off British Columbia, Woodland Caribou Provincial Park in Manitoba and much of the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. Jim had a wide circle of friends who shared these adventures with him. His biggest adventure was the one he spent with his wife, Nancy, niece, Carli and her husband, Jon, and their three beautiful girls, Nevada, Alayna and Allysen, sharing many great times together.
Jim is survived by his wife, Nancy; two brothers, Robert (Karen) of Pequot Lakes and John (Sandra) of Winnebago; special niece, Carli and her husband, Jon Mann of Rapidan; step-daughter, Ann Marie Route of Neptune Beach, Florida; cousins, many brothers and sisters in law, many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and one great-great-niece.
