Joan "Joni" Chester, age 75 of Mankato, died Friday, December 30, 2011 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 4, 2012 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. A private family spring burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Tuesday, January 3, 2012 at North Mankato Mortuary-NORTHVIEW and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials are preferred to Loyola Catholic Schools or Catholic Charities. In loving tribute to our mother, Joni's family requests you wear something red.
Joni was born April 19, 1936 to William and Ethel (Siercks) Quinn in Faribault, MN. She graduated from Faribault Bethlehem Academy. On September 17, 1957, Joni was united in marriage to Philip Chester at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Northfield. They were blessed with five children. The most important thing to Joni, was to love and serve those around her. With Catholic Charities, she fostered over 100 babies. In 2000, Joni and Phil received the JC Penney Distinguished Service Award for her excellent care and service for foster babies. Joni welcomed everyone she met with a kind smile, love, and respect. Joni was the face of Applewood, and she loved being a hostess. She adored her family, holidays, her bowling team, and her lifelong friends.
Joni is survived by her husband, Phil; five children: Joe (Karen) Chester, Bob (Merrelin) Chester, Mark (Joyce) Chester, Nancy (Mark) Kowalski, and Julie (Kevin) Johnson; 11 grandchildren: Kelsey, Molly and Gena Chester, Olivia Chester, Christopher and Mackenzie Chester, Jessica and Brandon Kowalski and Kyle, Erik and Sara Johnson; three sisters: Judy Streitz, Sharon Perkinson and Diane Wild; many nieces and nephews; and over 100 foster babies.
Joni was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Bill (Ardyce) Quinn; sister, Cassie (Roy) Rogers; infant brother, Robert; and sister-in-law, Joan Stout.
