Father Francis P. Kunz, age 87, of Mankato, died on Saturday, December 24th, 2011 at Oaklawn Health Care Center in Mankato.
Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, December 29th at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Bishop John Quinn officiating and Father James Kunz, Father John Kunz and all concelebrating priests. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 3-7 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the updating of the church altar.
Francis was born on April 17th, 1924 in Mankato to Henry and Frances (Keber) Kunz. He attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Madelia. Francis studied theology at St. Paul Seminary, in St. Paul, MN. He was ordained a priest on April 23rd, 1949. Francis served as a priest at the Cathedral in Winona, chaplain at St. Marys Hospital, Rochester, taught at Lourdes High School and served at St. John's, Rochester, Holy Family in East Chain, Our Lady of Good Counsel, Wilmont, St. Francis, Rochester, Sacred Heart in Waseca, St. Mary's in Caledonia, and then at St. John the Baptist in Mankato. Francis enjoyed family and friends during his 62 years of pastoral ministry in the Diocese of Winona.
He is survived by two brothers, Raymond Kunz and Clement Kunz, both of Madelia; nieces and nephews: Fr. James Kunz of Rochester, Fr. John Kunz of Mankato, Lucille (James) Ammann of Butterfield, Lucinda (George) Brust of Minneapolis, Mark (Ann) Kunz of Madelia, Janet (Raul) Harbitz of St. James, and Richard (Julie) Kunz of Eagle Lake; his caregivers, Sam (Betty) Blace of Mankato; and many great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, Robert, four sisters, Sr. Agatha SSND, Sr. Beatrice SSND, Sr. Lucida SSND, and Agatha Diedrich.
