Sandra D. Fitterer, age 74 of Mankato, passed away with her family by her side, Friday, December 9, 2011 at Mayo Clinic Health System-Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 14, 2011 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. John Kunz officiating. Burial will be in Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery, North Mankato. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m., Monday, December 12, 2011 at North Mankato Mortuary-Northview and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Diabetes Association.
Sandra Darlene was born July 12, 1937 to Kermit and Blanche (Schmitt) Michels in Mankato. She graduated from Mankato High School in 1955, then graduated from Mankato State College in 1959. On June 27, 1959, Sandra was united in marriage to Robert Fitterer at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in North Mankato. Bob kept his vow to take her and their family on vacation every year. Sandra taught for six years at Monroe Elementary School, raised their family, and went back into substitute teaching in Mankato District 77. For 20 years, she volunteered as a Guardian ad Litem for Blue Earth County. Sandra was a member of the MN Valley Civitan Club and the Kern's Oak Grove Cemetery Auxillary. She enjoyed her family, country and bluegrass music, traveling, playing cards, ballroom dancing, gardening, and reading. Her ideal day was sitting in the sunshine on a warm summer day reading a book and sipping her sun tea. Sandra loved her family and all of her friends. She will be missed by all of those whose lives she touched.
Sandra is survived by her husband, Bob of 52 years; three children: Denise (friend, Lisa) of Mankato, Alan (Cheryl) of Lonsdale, and Cynthia of Los Angeles, CA; three grandchildren: Matthew, Brynn, and Grant; two sisters: Joyce (Gary) Scott and Joan Cousins; brother, Dennis (Caron) Michels; and many nieces and nephews.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Kayle Michels.
