Wallace R. "Wally" Anderson, 87, of Mankato, died Sunday, November 22, 2009 at ISJ Hospital.
Funeral service will be held on Friday, November 27 at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Mankato with the Rev. Dawn Carder officiating. Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 25 from 4-6:30 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Friday. Burial with military honors will be at Fort Snelling National Cemetery on Monday.
Wally was born on October 10, 1922 in LaCrosse, WI, son of Gustave and Esther (Soderstrom) Anderson. He graduated from Logan High School in LaCrosse and attended LaCrosse State College and the University of Wisconsin.
He enlisted in the Army Air Force in 1942 and served in the 15th Air Force stationed in southern Italy. As a radio operator and gunner on the B-24 Liberator bomber, he flew 29 missions before his plane was shot down and crew reported missing in action.
He married Margery Uhl in Galesville, WI on November 28, 1953. They had two children, Robert and Laura. They lived in several locations before moving to Mankato in 1967 when Wally went to work in the advertising department of the Mankato Free Press. He retired in 1986.
Wally was a member of First Presbyterian Church, Mankato, where he served as a deacon and an elder. He was also a member of the Kato Community Club and the Melvin Daskam American Legion post in Redwood Falls. He served on the Board of the Salvation Army in Mankato.
Interests included sports, especially baseball and football, railroads, golfing and painting. For the past 19 years, he and Marge spent several winter months in Naples, FL.
Wally is survived by his wife Margery; son Robert (Stephanie) Anderson of Eagan, MN and daughter Laura (Stephen) Hannon of Enola, PA, and four granddaughters, Sydney and Samantha Anderson and Rose and Grace Hannon. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Norman, sisters Leona and Helen, and brother-in-law Philip Uhl.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to First Presbyterian Church or the Salvation Army.
