Frederick Wilbert Stuemke, age 89 of Mankato, died Wednesday, October 14, 2009 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital in Mankato.

Funeral service will be at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 19, 2009 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Jack Dahl officiating. Burial with military honors will take place at Woodland Hills Memorial Park. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday. Memorials are preferred to an organization of the donor's choice. Mankato Mortuary is assisting the family with arrangements.

Frederick was born on September 17, 1920 in Westford Township, Martin County, Minnesota to Wilbert and Louisa (Ladage) Stuemke. He moved to Springfield, IL at the age of nine months and returned to Good Thunder in 1928. He graduated from Amboy High School in 1938. He served his country in the United States Navy on October 10, 1942 and served until his honorable discharge in 1945. He was a Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class and served on the Destroyer Escort US Sturdevaut DE239 during WWII. He worked as a salesman for Montgomery Ward from 1954-1960. He was united in marriage to Rosella Edwards Oney on November 6, 1960 in Mankato. The couple moved to a farm in Mankato Township. He worked for Gamble Skogmo as a salesman from 1960-1976 and he retired from working in 1982. He was a member of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, VFW Post 950, and American Legion Post 11. He enjoyed farming, reading and traveling.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Rosella Stuemke of Mankato; two stepchildren, Gary (Carol) Oney of Mankato, and Kathryn Hofstedt of Columbia Heights; sister-in-law, Helen Meshke of rural Lake Crystal; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Milton; three sisters, Emma Iams, Leona Hiller, and Edna Dobie.
