Joseph F. Hirt Jr., age 85 of North Mankato, died peacefully in his sleep on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living in North Mankato.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 at 1:00 PM, at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church with Rev. Octavio Cortez, officiating. A visitation will begin at 11:30 AM at church. Burial in Calvary Cemetery in Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is assisting with arrangements. Memorials are preferred to the Schola Foundation Fund or an organization of the donor's choice.
Joseph was born January 22, 1928 in Kansas City, MO to Joseph and Bertha (Poeschl) Hirt. He attended Catholic grade school and public high school in Kansas City and went on to graduate from University of Missouri with a BA in Agriculture in 1950. During his lifetime Joseph was active in many Agribusiness organizations, past vice president of Fort Worth Feed Club, secretary of Kansas City Feed Club and past treasury of Rotary Club of Liberty, MO. Upon moving to Mankato Joseph served on the Mankato Transportation Committee and the Planning Commission as well as annual United Fund drives. Joseph retired from Hubbard Milling Co in September 1990 and devoted much of his time volunteering in his church and in yearly Tax counseling with AARP, and visiting his grandchildren. His one hobby was fishing when ever time and weather permitted.
Joseph married his beloved wife, Shirley Ann Staab on January 24, 1953 after serving two years in the army in Japan and Korea. Joseph and Shirley celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 24, 2003, before Shirley was called home by Jesus on February 24, 2003.
Joseph is survived by his two sons Carl L. Hirt and his wife Diane of St. Louis Park, MN and Joseph Jr. of Champlin, MN; two daughters, Laura (David) Andrew of Warrensberg, MO and Ruth (Bryan) Read of Leesburg, VA; one brother; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents; beloved wife, Shirley; and one brother.
