Raymond Oscar Thompson, age 90 of Mankato, died Sunday, February 24, 2013, at Mayo Clinic Health System - Mankato.
A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 1, 2013, at Mankato Mortuary, with Rev. Dr. Scott E. Olson officiating. Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the mortuary. A luncheon will follow at Grace Lutheran Church in Mankato. Memorials are preferred to Parkinson's Research, Alzheimer's Research, or the donor's choice.
Raymond was born on January 5, 1923, in St. Paul, MN to Oscar and Emma (Jorgenson) Thompson. He graduated from Albert Lea High School in 1941. Ray served in the United States Army Air Force during World War II from January 1943 to March 1946. Ray graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1950 with a degree in Civil Engineering. Ray was united in marriage to Lillian Rose VerHey on December 20, 1947 in Hollandale, MN. He worked for 32 years with the State of Minnesota Department of Transportation. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and the MN Society of Professional Engineers. Ray enjoyed golfing, bowling, playing cards, backgammon, camping, traveling, and listening to bluegrass music. He also enjoyed product research, cooking, woodworking, gardening, and watching western movies. The most important people in his life were his wife, children, and grandchildren.
Ray is survived by his six children, Susan Wickstrom of Mankato, Kathryn (Frank) Ferraro of Mankato, Pamela (Jon) Melander of Spicer, Amy Thompson of Mankato, Andrew (Cheryl) Thompson of Bloomington, and Matthew (Denise Green) Thompson of Rosemount; nine grandchildren, Joel (Christy), Molly, Daniel, Rebecca (J.J.), Gina, Olivia, Shane, Clint, Luke; five great-grandchildren, Talia, Kayla, Taylor, Maya, Isabella; brother, Lowell (Janice) Thompson of Wells; many nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Lillian in 2010; and infant daughter, Janice.
