Elaine D. Hellekson, age 84, of rural Lake Crystal, died Sunday, May 25, 2008 at Autumn Grace in Mankato.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 29, 2008 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Judson, with Rev. Rebecca Sullivan officiating. Burial will be in Hebron Cemetery, Nicollet Township, Nicollet County. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one half hour before service at church on Thursday.

Elaine was born November 28, 1923 to Oran and Marie (Herbst) Gustafson in rural Judson. She attended grade school in Judson and graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1941. After high school she learned bookkeeping at Mankato Commercial College. Elaine worked as a bookkeeper for Jakobe Lumber Co. and for many years served as treasurer for her church.

On January 6, 1946, she married Willard D. Hellekson and became a fulltime homemaker and mother. Her family, both close and extended, were very important to her and she kept in touch with the events of their lives.

Elaine was a talented seamstress and knitter, creating many tailored suits, dresses, and formals for herself and her daughter. She was a lifelong musician, playing piano, organ. She taught piano and organ lessons for many years and also played for her church, Bethany Lutheran Church of Judson, where she was a member all of her life. Other interests included baking, gardening, and a love of animals, especially cats.

Elaine is survived by her two children, Carol Lee (David Ross) of Mankato and Douglas (Marsha) Hellekson of Vernon Center; 3 grandchildren, Daniel (Misten) Hellekson of rural Lake Crystal, Michael Hellekson of Vernon Center, and Drew Dandurand of Mankato; great-granddaughter, Lauryn ; nieces, a nephew, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Willard of 61 years in October 2007.

We are all very grateful to the staff at Autumn Grace Senior Services who took excellent care of her for the past two years and for all the special comfort to her in her final weeks.
