Mervin Walter Altenburg, age 87, of North Mankato and formerly of rural Vernon Center, died Wednesday, August 26, 2009 at North Point Assisted Living Community with his family at his side.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, August 31, 2009 at St. John's Lutheran Church, Willow Creek with Rev. John C. Bennett officiating. Burial will be in Willow Creek North Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m., Sunday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before the service at the church on Monday. Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
Mervin was born April 29, 1922 to Walter and Laura (Wilke) Altenburg in Pleasant Mound Township, Blue Earth County. Mervin was united in marriage to Esther Reinke on November 7, 1943 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Willow Creek. He farmed his whole life in Ceresco Township, rural Vernon Center. Mervin was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Willow Creek and served on several church committees. He was also a member of the Amboy Lion's Club and was on the FSA Board. Mervin enjoyed woodworking, playing cards, fishing, having coffee with friends, and spending time with his family.
Mervin is survived by two sons, Gary (Rosie) Altenburg of Vernon Center and Les (Lois) Altenburg of North Mankato; two daughters, Carol Krosch of Good Thunder and Diane (Dennis) Iverson of Plymouth; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; one brother, Victor (Leila) Altenburg of Mankato; three sisters, Delila Menk of New Ulm, Marion Breitbarth of Truman, and Alice Schlie of Janesville; also many nieces and nephews.
Mervin was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Esther in 2003; and one sister.
