Sister Marguerite Thiry, (aka Sister Janet), School Sister of Notre Dame, died Saturday, January 5, 2008, at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato, Minnesota, at the age of 85. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, January 9, at 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel with Fr. Ted Hottinger, S.J. as celebrant. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday at Good Counsel, with Vespers in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral on Wednesday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge.

Sister Marguerite was born in St. Paul, Minnesota, on February 1, 1922, to Nicholas and Frances (Wagner) Thiry. In 1940 she entered the candidature of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and took First Vows in 1943. Having earned a B.A. in Education from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee, and an M.A. in Improvement of Instruction from St. Thomas College, St. Paul, she taught middle and upper grades for 30 years in schools in Minnesota, Iowa, and Washington. In Mankato, she taught at SS. Peter & Paul for a number of years. Following her years of teaching, she worked in parish ministry for another 20 years. In 1999, she came to Good Counsel where she served as driver until retiring in 2002.

Sister Marguerite is survived by her sister Bernadette (Anderson). She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters, Sister M. Philomene, SSND, and Dolores (Henton) and her brothers Clarence and Charles.
