Sister M. Christine Mardian, SSND, died Saturday, December 22, 2007 at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato, Minnesota, at the age of 97. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated by her brother, Father Pius Mardian, on Thursday, December 27.
Sister M. Christine (Barbara Mardian) was born in Bowdle, South Dakota, on October 8, 1910, to Anton and Regina (Heintz) Mardian. In 1932 she entered the candidature of the School Sisters of Notre Dame and took First Vows in 1934. With the exception of seven years in home service in convents in St. Paul and Winona, she lived at Good Counsel for 65 years where she served for 27 years in the bakery as head baker, baking daily for nearly 400 Sisters and Academy students. At times, she also worked in the Sisters dining room. She retired in 1993, but continued to do what she loved to do, baking for the annual Craft Fairs.
Sister is survived by her brother, Father Pius Mardian of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, Father Joseph Mardian, by her two SSND sisters, Sisters M. Marina and M. Barbara, and her sister Adelaide (Mrs. Joseph Schmaltz).
