Margaret Picha

Sister Margaret Picha, SSND, (aka Sister Mary Ervin) died Saturday, November 10, 2007, in Glens Falls Hospital in Glens Falls, NY, at the age of 67. The Funeral Mass, with Fr. Jerome E. Paulson as celebrant, will be celebrated on Monday, November 19, at 10:30 a.m. in Good Counsel Chapel, Mankato. Vespers will be on Sunday, November 18, in the chapel at 7:00 p.m.

Margaret was born in Hutchinson, Minnesota, on July 4, 1940, the first of four children born to John J. and Appolonia (Nowak) Picha who resided in Silver Lake, Minnesota. Following her grade school days at St. Joseph School, she attended Good Counsel Academy in Mankato for four years, graduating in 1958. Following graduation she entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato, and took First Vows in 1960.

For ten years she taught the upper and middle grades in schools in New Hradec, ND, Rogers, MN, and Spokane, WA. In addition to classroom teaching she also had the music and at times served as principal. Sister Margaret earned a B.A. in English and Elementary Education, an M.A. in Religious Education, and an M.A. in Human Development.

In 1971 she became Director of the Center for Spiritual Development, first located in Mankato, then moving to Olivia, and finally to Bird Island. Here she initiated Spiritual Directors programs and worked with a variety of people in spiritual direction, conducting conferences and retreats. From 1989 to 1991, at the request of Bishop Raymond A. Lucker, she served on the New Ulm Diocesan staff, where she was Director of the Office for Personnel, Director of the Office for Continuing Education of the Clergy, and Vicar of Religious. At the same time, she also spent time in spiritual direction and other spiritual development activities around the country. She was selected for these positions because of her knowledge of the Diocese, for her many gifts, and for her love for the people of the Diocese.

In 1991, Sister Margaret became Director of Sabbatical Programs at Wellsprings Renewal Center in Glens Falls, NY, where she worked closely with Brother Michael Laratonda, FMS. In addition to the sabbatical program at Wellsprings, she conducted workshops for sisters, priests, and laity in other states and abroad.

Sister is survived by her sisters, Monica Peterson of Eagan, Minnesota, and Marian Bomgren of Kelliher, Minnesota, and her brother, Ervin Picha of Indianapolis, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents.
