Edith May Sutherland, age 77, of Mankato and formerly of Lake Crystal, died Tuesday, October 16, 2007 at St. Mary's Hospital, Rochester.
Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 20, 2007 at the First Presbyterian Church, Lake Crystal with Rev. Randal Lubbers, officiating. Burial will be 9:30 a.m., Saturday at Lake Crystal Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Friday at Lake Crystal Mortuary and will continue one hour before service at church on Saturday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to an organization of the donor's choice.
Edith was born February 15, 1930 to Price and Julia (Ryan) Campbell in Judson Township, Blue Earth County, Minnesota. She graduated from Lake Crystal High School in 1948 and from Mankato State College in 1950 with a degree in Elementary Education. She married Al Sutherland on July 14, 1951 at Jerusalem Presbyterian Church, Judson Township. Edith taught Elementary, Music, and Phy. Ed. at Truman, Garden City, Rapidan, Vernon Center, and Lake Crystal. Following her teaching career she worked for Sween Corporation in sales and marketing. She then worked for Hillcrest Health Care Center and Mankato Lutheran Home and for herself for the Newton Corporation selling advertising specialties. Edith was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Crystal, the church choir, Women's Association, Women's Circle, the Lake Crystal Community Band, and Lake Crystal Lioness Club. Edith was best known for her gift of singing. She began singing as a very young child and continued to share her gift to date. She also loved to read and spend time with family and friends.
Edith is survived by her husband, Al of Mankato; two children, Cathy Magnus and husband, Gerald of Slayton, Steve Sutherland and wife, Jean of Yuma, AZ; special Italian foreign exchange daughter, Maria Valsecchi and husband, Adriano; seven grandchildren, Jodi (John) Carlson, Jacki (Brent) Jurrens, Janel, Mitchell, and Annette Magnus, Jasmine Sutherland and Heidi Sutherland Curcio; five great-grandchildren, Taylor and Carter Jurrens, Daulton and Linkoln Carlson, Anthony Curcio; brother, James "Jake" Campbell and wife, Lorraine of St. Peter; two sisters-in-law, Velma Collis of Mankato and Bernita Campbell of Edina; many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Edith was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Clarence, Harold, and William Campbell; and sister, Emma Jones-Bartsch.
