Donald Jacques was born on April 24, 1922 in Brown County, Kansas to Truman A. and Nora (Norton) Jacques, the youngest of nine children. He attended country school and graduated from Willis High School in 1940. In October of 1942, he was inducted into the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. Following Basic Training, he attended classes for six months at the University of Georgia in Athens, studying Radio Communications. He was deployed with the 593rd ESBR unit from Fort Ord, California, and served two and a half years in the Phillipines, Nooemfoor Island, New Guinea, and Japan. He was honorably discharged on December 31, 1945.
On June 7, 1947, he married Dorothy Ann Friday at Zion Lutheran Church in Lake Crystal. They began their new life together farming in Brown County, Kansas until 1960 and then moved to Lake Crystal and farmed until retiring in 1989.
Don was active in church work and served as Sunday School Superintendant, teacher, and was on the Board of Trustees, Deacons, and both President and Secretary of the congregation. While in Kansas, Upper Wolf Lutheran Church built a new facility with much of the labor provided by congregants. Don took pride in sharing his time and gifts, and those of other members, to erect this house of worship.
He was a VFW member in Kansas and a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 294 in Lake Crystal.
Don enjoyed people and sharing stories. Those most blessed by his love, hugs, and serenades were his seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. He will be missed by many.
Don is survived by three children, Barry (Cindy) Jacques of Lake Crystal, Donita Jacques (Christopher Calvin) of Fountain Inn, South Carolina, and Debra (Douglas) Wallace of Omaha, Nebraska; seven grandchildren; two sisters; one sister-in-law; and nieces and nephews.
Don was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Dorothy; parents; three sisters; and three brothers.
