Wellington "Duke" Nesmith Dickson Jr., age 78, of Mankato died Monday, October 31, 2011 at Mayo Clinic Health System, Mankato.
Memorial Service will be held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday, November 3, 2011 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, Mankato with visitation from 5-7 p.m. at church on Thursday. Burial will in Lakewood Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Lions Club. Mankato Mortuary assisted the family with arrangements.
Duke was born February 28, 1933 to Wellington "Bud" and Marion (Seiberlich) Dickson. He graduated from Washburn High School, Minneapolis in 1951. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed in Pensacola, Florida until his discharge in 1954. A former resident of Pine River, MN area where he coordinated the Heartland Queen Program promoting the communities of Northern Minnesota. Duke was a long time resident of Marianna, Florida where he worked tirelessly fundraising for the Jackson County Lion's Club to benefit the visually impaired. His dedication led him to his interest and involvement in rehabilitation for the visually impaired and the Southeastern Guide Dogs Training Center. He extended his devotion to this cause by coordinating Junior Lions Clubs in schools near Marianna, Florida. He was an active member of Cypress Methodist Church. He also enjoyed the camaraderie of those who shared his interest in antique cars. Duke retired after a long career with the State of Florida Corrections Department. He spent the past three years in Mankato, living near his daughters and their families. He became a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church where he enjoyed ushering.
Duke was loved and will be missed by daughters, Kathy (Dan) Sallstrom, Linda Koopman, Martha (Jerome) Hoppe all of Mankato; son, David (Mary) Dickson of Pierre, South Dakota; brother, William (Kay) Dickson of Spring Hill, Florida; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; three nieces and nephews;
Duke was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son.
