Marcella Ruth Smith, age 92, of Mankato and formerly of Lake Crystal, died Thursday, October 20, 2011 at Laurel's Peak in Mankato.
Memorial Service will be 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 24, 2011 at North Mankato Mortuary - NORTHVIEW, 2060 Commerce Drive, North Mankato, with Rev. Jerry David, officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at the mortuary. Private family burial will be in Lake Crystal Cemetery.
Marcella was born on August 8, 1919, in Lincoln Township, Blue Earth County. She was the daughter of Silas and Ruth (Clark) Carlson. Marcella was a 1937 graduate of Garden City High School and received her R.N. at St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester in 1941. She joined the U.S. Army Nurse Corps in 1943 and served in a military field hospital in England until the end of WWII in 1945. Marcella attended Bob Jones University and graduated from Northwestern Bible School in 1949. She served four years as a missionary in Nigeria and upon her return received a Master's Degree in Nursing Education from Columbia University in New York. Marcella taught nursing in New Ulm and at Mankato State College. She later was a nurse at the Comfrey Hospital. Marcella was united in marriage to John Smith in December of 1965. They lived on his farm near Jeffers until his death, when she then moved to Lake Crystal. Marcella was a member of the American Legion and MCCL, and assisted in the Salvation Army Store in Mankato as well as G.R.A.C.E. in Lake Crystal. She was an active member of the Garden City Baptist Church and Jeffers Baptist Church before moving her membership to the Lake Crystal Baptist Church. She enjoyed quilting and traveling.
Marcella is survived by two step-daughters, Edith (Fred) Penner of South Sioux City, NE and Esther (Ronn) Heath of Rochester; step-daughter-in-law, Marlene Smith of Windom; 12 step-grandchildren and 27 step-great-grandchildren; four brothers, Lewis Carlson, Phillip (Valleen) Carlson, both of Mankato; Robert (Norma) Carlson of North Mankato, and Wesley (Gloria) Carlson of Chino Valley, AZ; two sisters, Edna Hughes of Lorena, TX, and Eleanor (Albert) Roth of Laramie, WY; sister-in-law, Louise Carlson of Marysville, WA; also many nieces and nephews.
Marcella was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John in 1988; step-son, Paul E. Smith; and one brother, Victor Carlson.
