John William Scheurer, age 82, of Mankato died, Tuesday, March 2, 2010 at the Benedictine Living Community in St. Peter.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, March 5, 2010 at Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Mankato. Private family burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 9-11 a.m. Friday at church. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be given to the Benedictine Living Community.
John was born May 6, 1927 to John R. and Grace (Sturm) Scheurer in Mankato. He attended Ss. Peter and Paul School. John served his country during World War II with the U.S. Navy Seabees and was stationed in the Pacific Theatre and at Okinawa, Japan. He was employed in construction as a crane operator his entire life. John started working with his father at John Scheurer Construction, then Johnson Brothers Construction in the Twin Cities building bridges, SMC of Mankato, and various other companies before retiring. He was a member of Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, American Legion Post 11, VFW Post 950, and Union Local 49 for 55 years. John enjoyed golfing, woodworking, and spending time with his grandchildren.
John is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lorraine; three children, Jack Scheurer of Washington, DC, Sandy (Mike) Newton of Lake Crystal, Tammy Hilger (Dan Corbett) of Mankato; five grandchildren, Mike Hilger of Henderson, NV, Matt Hilger of Mankato, Nicole Hilger of Mankato, Lisa Scheurer of Seattle, WA, and John Scheurer of Panama City, FL; one great-grandchild; brother, Bernard (Marilyn) Scheurer of Mankato; sister, Bernice Rash of Missouri; sister-in-law, JoAnne (Orval) Olson of Shakopee; nieces, nephews, and cousins.
John was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bruce in 1949; daughter, Janice Lee in 1963; brother, Bill; sister, Corrine Borchert.
