Oris Gilman Ostgarden, age 83, of Mankato, MN died peacefully with his family at his side on Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at Immanuel St. Joseph's Hospital.
Memorial Service was held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, January 8, 2010 at S.S. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Mankato, with celebrant Father Samuel Leonard, followed by lunch in Jesuit Hall. Private burial was at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors by American Legion Post 11. Memorials are preferred to donor's choice. Arrangements are with Mankato Mortuary.
Oris was born on March 27, 1926 to Clarence and Agnes (Viken) Ostgarden in Fertile, MN. He attended Fertile High School and served his country in the US Navy during World War II on an aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. He also served in the Merchant Marines and in the US Army 11th Airborne Division as a Sgt. 1st Class during the Korean War. Oris married Marian Simonds on April 15, 1950 at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Leetonia, Ohio, and worked for Western Union for 32 years, retiring in 1988. As an active member of S.S. Peter & Paul's parish, Oris was a dedicated volunteer serving as Eucharistic minister, usher, server at funeral services, setting up the annual Christmas manger, and assisting with church maintenance. Most of all, Oris enjoyed meeting people, visiting and sharing life stories and experiences. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, bowling, fishing and traveling.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marian of Mankato; and 11 children, Oris Joseph Ostgarden of St. Peter, Arnold (Cindy) Ostgarden of Kindred, ND, Gerry Ostgarden and special friend, Linda Dempsey of Mankato, Kathryn "Sis" Braam of St. Peter, Mary Iverson and her partner, Steve Sperl of Rochert, MN, Nancy (Chris) Rivers of Vail, CO, Jo (Michole Jensen) Ostgarden of Portland, OR, George (Kathleen) Ostgarden of Mankato, Diana (Thomas) Wittrock of Albuquerque, NM, Karen Groebner of Mankato and special friend, David Blaschko, John Ostgarden and his partner, Lowell Gordon of Clinton Falls Township; 23 grandchildren; 3 step grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; and 3 step great-grandchildren; brother, Clarence "Bud" (Janice) Ostgarden of Moorhead, MN; sister, Grace Aker of East Grand Forks, MN; dear cousin, Robert Heckman of Fertile, MN; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Oris was preceded in death by his parents; his daughter, Julie Ostgarden; and his granddaughter, Marcie Iverson.
