Mark Philip Wheeler, 60, of North Mankato, MN passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, June 23, 2010. Dr. Wheeler was diagnosed with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease) in May.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 28, 2010 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, North Mankato with Rev. Peter Nosbush officiating. Visitation will be held from 1 " 4 p.m., Sunday, June 27 at Mankato Mortuary. Memorials may be directed to the ALS Association"Minnesota Chapter or a Hospice of your choice.
Mark was born on October 29, 1949 to Gordon and Dorothy (Jefson) Wheeler in Minneapolis, MN. He graduated from St. Louis Park High School and received his undergraduate degree in philosophy from the University of Minnesota. He received his premedical training and medical degree from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He interned at St. Paul-Ramsey Hospital and completed his residency in internal medicine at the Minneapolis VA Hospital and was board certified in internal medicine in 1978. He practiced medicine at the Mankato Clinic for 31 years.
He married Margo (Baldwin) Wheeler on November 24, 1972 in Minneapolis. Mark was a devoted father and husband. He enjoyed sailing until his daughter, Becca, tried to jump off the boat as a toddler. He loved traveling with his family all over the U.S. including the Rocky Mountains and Pacific Northwest, as well as Italy, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand.
When he was not serving patients, Mark spent his time brewing beer, mastering the grill and woodworking. Coming from a strong Scandinavian heritage, Mark took a particular interest in Norwegian art, history and culture. This passion led to celebrating Christmas dinners with Swedish meatballs, baking traditional Norwegian sandbakkel cookies and crafting Scandinavian furniture. He even designed cribbage boards featuring the Norwegian flag. He was an avid reader and had a great fondness for history.
Mark is survived by his wife, Margo of North Mankato; two children, Colin Wheeler and his fianc" Bobbi Miller of Minneapolis, Becca Wheeler of Kalispell, MT; brother Ward (Sue) Wheeler of Golden Valley; two nieces, Mackenzie (Matt) Anderson and Brittany Wheeler; two great-nephews, Norse and Finn Anderson; and many extended family.
Mark was preceded in death by his parents.
