Charles Elbert Evans, of Mankato and formerly of Lake Crystal, died Thursday, June 10, 2010 five days before his 90th Birthday.
Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Mankato Mortuary. Visitation will be held from 4-6:30 p.m., Thursday at Mankato Mortuary. Burial will be in Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Lake Crystal Wellcome Memorial Schools, First Presbyterian Church of Lake Crystal, or donor's choice.
Charles was born June 15, 1920 to Elbert and Alice (Brown) Evans in Winton, MN. He moved with his family to Eveleth in 1925 and graduated from Eveleth High School in 1937 and later St. Cloud State Teachers College. Chuck served his country with the U.S. Army during World War II as a medical x-ray technician in several field hospitals in France. After his honorable discharge he spent 20 years in the Army Reserve. He taught mathematics at Aitkin where he met his future wife, Florence Birkemeyer, they were married on August 10, 1949 in St. Cloud. Chuck returned to school and graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1951 with a B.A. in School Administration. He then was employed as Elmore High School Principal, Zumbrota High School Principal, Becker Schools Superintendent, and Lake Crystal Schools Superintendent before retiring in 1980. After retirement he served as Garden City Township Clerk for 18 years. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church Lake Crystal where he was a past Sunday School Teacher and Elder. Chuck was a member of the American Legion, past president of the Lions Club, and past president and show chairman of Key City Kennel Club. He enjoyed sail boating on Crystal Lake, gardening, hunting, fishing, raising, and training dogs. He showed Brittany's, Papillion's, and Toy Spaniels of which he showed several to championship. Chuck and Florence moved from Lake Crystal to Mankato in 2002.
Chuck is survived by his wife of 61 years, Florence of Mankato; brother, George and wife, Peggy of Mankato, and several nieces and nephews.
Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Ward Evans; sister, Jean Smith; and nephew, Patrick Dowling.
