Marvin "Barney" Lewellyn, who coached high school and college football for fifty years, died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Oak Terrace Assisted Living in North Mankato at 91 years of age.
A private memorial service will be held for family. Public visitation will be held from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at Mankato Mortuary.
Barney was born in Chariton, IA on February 11, 1919 to Thomas John and Bertha Blanche (Brown) Lewellyn. They moved shortly after that to Valley Junction (now West Des Moines), IA. Barney was a graduate of Valley High School in West Des Moines. In 1941 he received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from what is now the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls. He earned a Master's Degree from the University of Iowa in 1949.
Barney served 41 months with the First Marine Division in World War II in the southwest and central Pacific areas. He taught and coached in high schools in Iowa and Minnesota and college football at South Dakota Tech (School of Mines) in Rapid City, SD, Nebraska State College in Wayne, NE, Minnesota State in Mankato and Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter. The Rapid City Journal named him Coach of the Year in 1951. In 1953, the Omaha World Herald accorded him the same honor in the state of Nebraska. In 2003, Barney was the first football coach initiated into the newly established Hall of Fame at the School of Mines in Rapid City, SD. He was a member of Centenary United Methodist Church and the National Football Coaches Association.
Barney married Margaret Sandy on March 14, 1945 in Des Moines, IA. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Margaret; three children, Dr. Mark Lewellyn and Mary Fox of Alexandria, VA, Sandy Lewellyn of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Janet Lewellyn Taylor and Patrick Taylor of Stewartville, MN; four grandchildren, Alec Lewellyn, Conor Lewellyn, Karen Carlock, and Colleen Hammond; sister-in-law, Betty Libby and her husband, Bob; and four nephews and their families.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Floyd. Instead of flowers or memorials, the family requests reaching out a helping hand to someone in need. The family also wishes to express gratitude to the staff and personnel at Oak Terrace East for their excellent care and support along with the Hospice team and Elder Care.
