Clarence "Kent" Skarpohl died Friday, May 14, 2010 at his home after a short battle with Leukemia.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Mankato with Rev. Jay Dahlvang officiating. Visitation will be Friday, May 21 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
Kent Skarpohl was born February 7, 1926 to Anne (Markeson) and John Skarpohl at the family farm in rural Madelia. Before graduating from St. James High School he spent a couple of summers in Idaho working in the forest service and picking "spuds." He served in the United States Army as Staff Sergeant during World War II. He returned home from Europe and worked at Markeson Implement. Kent was united in marriage on January 3, 1953 to Donna Frederickson at La Salle Lutheran Church. They moved to Pueblo, Colorado where he worked for Ward Transport. Returning to Mankato he worked for Schurmer Transport until he started his own trucking business in 1958. In 1974 he and his wife, Donna, started Skarpohl Pressure Washer Sales and Service in which he was still active.
Kent loved classical music, motorcycles, and motorcycle touring, taking cruises and traveling with family and friends in the United States, Mexico, Europe, South America and Africa. He loved being a part of Bethlehem Lutheran Church for 55 years. He enjoyed working with his customers. Kent is remembered as an honest and chivalrous man who was liked by everyone he met.
Kent is survived by his wife, Donna Skarpohl; daughter, Rebecca Skarpohl and husband, Bruce Pepper; daughter, Christine Skarpohl Gregory and husband, Robert Boyd; son, Mark Skarpohl and wife Gayle; daughter, Mary Skarpohl and Brian Woitas; and good friend, Stephen Gregory; Grandchildren, Layla Chinburg and Jay Pappas, Ivy Chinburg, Connor Pepper, Shane Pepper and wife, Rachael, Forest Gregory, Aura Austin and husband, Christopher, Annastasia and Colton Skarpohl-Ost; Step-grandchildren, Darin and Dylan Woitas, Sierra and Forest Student; Great-grandchildren, Shonen Alvarado, Solomon Weller, Kaia Austin, Pilot Pappas and Roderic Pepper.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Anne and John Skarpohl and his sister and her husband, Jessie (Skarpohl) and Dick Keech.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or donor's choice.
