Arvala Cora Mekeland, age 90, of Vernon Center, died April 5, 2010 at her home in Vernon Center.
Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 pm, Thursday, April 8, 2010 at Mankato Mortuary in Mankato. Burial will be at Vernon Center Cemetery. Visitation will be from 4-7 pm Wednesday at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Arvala was born August 5, 1919 in Vernon Center to Frederick and Mary (Herlick) Wendt. She attended school in Vernon Center. Arvala was united in marriage to Donald Jacob Mekeland Sr. in Vernon Center on December 20, 1941. She was a homemaker for the majority of her life and loved spending time in her kitchen cooking and baking so she always had something good to offer her visitors. Arvala was an avid outdoorswoman who loved animals and spending time outside gardening with her flowers and fishing. She loved to take pictures, embroider, travel and spend time with her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, her great-great-grandchild and family pets. Because she was always willing to lend a helping hand, Arvala was considered a very kind and special woman to all who knew and loved her.
Arvala is survived by her six children, Donald L. (Patricia) Mekeland of Chaska; Cheryl (Marvin) Blok of Baldwin, WI; Karen (Thomas) Hickok of Amboy; Kathleen Boelter of Waseca; Patti (Richard) Koehler of North Mankato; Steven Mekeland of Lake Crystal; 16 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Arvala was preceded in death by her husband in January of 2003; one son, David; one grandson; two great-grandchildren.
