Sister Monica Even, School Sister of Notre Dame, age 73, died Thursday evening, August 21, 2003, at Good Counsel Convent, Mankato.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Monday at Good Counsel Chapel, with Fr. Neal Wilkinson, SJ, as celebrant Burial will follow in Good Counsel Cemetery. Visitation is from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday at Good Counsel, with Vespers in the chapel at 7:00 p.m. Visitation is also one hour prior to the funeral on Monday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge.
Sister Monica (Monica Even) also known as Sister Mary Harold, was born April 4, 1930, in Gilbertville, Iowa, to Joseph and Rose (Mangrich) Even. She entered the School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato in 1948 and took First Vows in 1951. Sister taught primary grades in Minnesota and Iowa for almost 50 years, with her last seven years at St. Joseph-St. John School, Mankato, where she was receptionist and did part-time teaching. She also taught in the Good Counsel Learning Center. Over the years she earned a B.S. in Education from Mount Mary College, Milwaukee.
Sister Monica is survived by two sisters, Sister Therese, SSND, and Mary Fischels, five brothers, Cletus, Anthony, Norbert, Ted, and Gerald, by many nieces and nephews, and by her Sisters in Community, the School Sisters of Notre Dame. She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Joe and Leonard.
