Gary Michael Wilmes, age 76, of Eagle Lake, died peacefully Monday, May 5, 2014 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 10, 2014 at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church, Mankato with Rev. Tim Biren, officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Mankato. Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m., Friday, May 9, at the church with a 7 p.m. prayer service and will continue one hour before service at the church on Saturday. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to Mayo Clinic Cancer Research Center.

Gary was born June 4, 1937 to Clarence L. and Edna (Harris) Wilmes in Mankato. He graduated from Loyola High School in 1955. Gary served in the National Guard from 1955-63. He was united in marriage to Bernice C. Tacheny on January 7, 1961 at SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Mankato. Gary farmed most of his life in the Eagle Lake area, milked dairy cows, and raised beef cattle. Gary also worked for the JC Marlow Company, then went to work at Walmart in the garden center. After retirement Gary and Bernice volunteered at the Salvation Army Store and were honored as Volunteers of the year for 2013. Gary was a member of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting and fishing, buying, selling, and collecting antiques, playing cards, and traveling. Gary was very proud to be a part of two research studies for Lymphoma at the Mayo Clinic.

Gary is survived by his wife of 53 years, Bernice; six children, Greg (Terry) Wilmes of Eagle Lake, Cindy (Tim) Krenik of Elysian, Nan (Mark) Guentzel of Good Thunder, Mary Wilmes of Billings, MT, Tammy (Brent) Danberry of Temecula, CA, Rose (Nate) Street of St. Clair; eleven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; one step great-great-grandchild; four sisters-in-law, Charlotte Jansen of Mankato, Sister June Marie Tacheny, SSND of Mankato, Karen Lynch of St. Clair, and Rita Tacheny of Owatonna; many nieces and nephews.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; baby granddaughter Guentzel; sister-in-law and brothers-in-law, Evelyn and Joe Jansen, Dewayne Tacheny, Marvin Tacheny, Werner Jansen, and Bernie Lynch.
