George Barrie Evans, age 84, of Mankato died Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at Oaklawn Health Care Center, Mankato.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, August 25, 2011 at First Congregational United Church of Christ, Mankato with Rev. Gary Titusdahl, officiating. Visitation will be one hour before service at church. Burial will be in Glenwood Cemetery, Mankato. Mankato Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

George was born February 3, 1927 in Eveleth, Minnesota to Elbert and Alice (Brown) Evans. He spent most of the first 30 years of his life in Eveleth. He worked for the Duluth, Mesabi, and Iron Range Railroad and as a powderman's helper in the iron mines. He attended Eveleth Junior College and then St. Cloud State University. He completed his degree in teaching after his time in the service with the U.S. Army during World War II. He was united in marriage to Margaret "Peggy" Hoffman on April 11, 1959 in Mankato. He taught and managed the pool at the YMCA in Red Wing for a time. He worked for the Minnesota Department of Transportation for 36 years, mainly as a surveyor.

Growing up in Eveleth, he loved the outdoors and approached hunting and fishing more as a way of life than as a hobby in his younger years. In later years he loved to travel, with his wife, children, and pets in their RV, seeing much of the United States and Canada. George loved music as well, from his high school days as a Sousaphone player to his many years with the First Congregational UCC choir, lending to the small but powerful group of men's voices.

Peggy was his wife, his "Queenie" for 52 years. They raised their children, Barrie and Sandra, with love and compassion, instilling in them that same love for nature and all of life.

George is survived by his wife, Peggy of Mankato; son, Barrie Evans of Mankato; daughter, Sandra Evans (Gregg Martinson) of St. Paul; six grandchildren, Sophia, Andie, Griffin, and Truly Evans, Megan and Sean Martinson; sister-in-law, Florence Evans of Mankato; niece, Elizabeth Powers; nephew, Richard Smith.

George was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Charles Evans and David "Ward" Evans; sister, Mary Jean Smith.
