Matthew "Matt" Cherney, age 16, of Mankato, went home to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Friday, July 29th at St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester.
A Homegoing Service will be held on Tuesday, August 2 at 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Baptist Church with Rev. David Banfield officiating. Visitation will be held on Monday from 4-7 p.m. at Mankato Mortuary and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
Matt was born on May 2, 1995 in Mankato to Tim and Angie (Swenson) Cherney. He just finished his sophomore year at Mankato East High School. Matt was a member of the BPA Club at Mankato East and specialized in PC Troubleshooting, repair, and java programming. He was an avid book reader until he discovered computers, which developed into a love of gaming. He loved the challenge of fixing anyone's computer. In previous years Matt attended FCA camp where he enjoyed golf. He enjoyed chess and competed every year in the local community education sponsored tournaments. Matt competed at the state level in First Lego League as well. Matt was a member of the youth group at Bethel Baptist where he was a media technician and enjoyed playing ping pong. Last, but not least, Matt was a Green Bay Packers fan.
Matt is survived by his parents Tim and Angie Cherney of Mankato; siblings, Abby, Megan, Aaron, Tabitha, Seth, and Jonathan; grandparents, Laudie and Pat Cherney of Courtenay, N.D. and Mary Swenson of St. Cloud, MN; great-grandmother, Irene Knutson of Onamia, MN; many aunts, uncles, and cousins; and best friends, Josh Kloster and Luke Milton.
